The World Health Organization (WHO) provided an update on COVID-19 a day after Japan reported two former passengers from the Diamond Princess cruise ship died from the virus.

The viral outbreak that began in China has infected more than 75,000 people globally. The World Health Organization has named the illness COVID-19, referring to its origin late last year and the coronavirus that causes it.

In mainland China, there have been 2,118 deaths among 74,576 cases, mostly in the central province of Hubei.

The two elderly passengers had been taken off the ship because they were infected with the virus. They were the first fatalities from the virus-stricken vessel.

China has confirmed there were 394 new confirmed cases, down sharply from the 1,749 reported just a day earlier.
